Lindens make excellent shade trees. Depending on the variety, they can grow to between 30 and 50 feet tall and 25 to 40 feet wide. Their heart-shaped leaves and strong leader favour a symmetrical or pyramidal shape. In mid-summer, the tree blooms with small, highly-scented yellow or cream-coloured flowers that are a favorite of bees and other pollinators.

Lindens belong to the genus Tilia in the mallow family which includes a diverse collection of ornamental herbaceous plants such as Hibiscus and hollyhock, as well as plants of huge economic importance such as cotton and cacao. Lindens are native to the Northern Hemisphere and typically have a long life span. They prefer full sun and moist but well-drained soil. Lindens require very little pruning or maintenance and are relatively free from pests or diseases.

Linden wood is light and unsuitable for construction projects. However, it is a preferred wood for artistic pursuits, such as woodcarving and instrument-making. Linden flowers can be dried and used to make a tasty and aromatic tea that is said to have calming effects on the body. Honey made exclusively from bees feeding on linden nectar is prized for its unique flavor and floral aroma.
